Accessory Living Units
An accessory living unit, which also is known as a granny flat, mother-in-law unit or accessory dwelling unit, is a secondary unit that provides independent living accommodations for one or more persons. It can be attached or detached from the main residence.
Increasingly both urban and rural communities are recognizing that accessory dwelling units (ADUs) can effectively contribute to their stock of available affordable housing and are providing policy/regulatory support for them. In some communities they remain highly controversial, despite existing informal or illegal usage. However, the trend is toward legalization/regulation of existing units and permitting of new units where appropiate.
